Last night I tried to make the impossible happen. I made the attempt of going to two different concerts in the same night. Around 17h I left home with a great friend of mine to go see The Glenn Miller Orchestra that started at 18h. We got there right on time, the concert was being held in Coliseu dos Recreios in Lisbon. For me, the best room for concerts in Lisbon, it has the capacity of 5000 people and the acustic is the best. It is an old coliseum build with the porpose of theatre which makes the sound very clear.
The Glenn Miller Orchestra is a band that honors the work of the late Glenn Miller. It was formed in 1988 and has the same formation on stage ever since, 5 saxophones, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 3 percussions and two singers, one male the other female. The repertoire includes more than 200 themes such as In The Mood, Moonlight Serenade, American Patrol o Chattanooga Choo Choo.
I was loving the concert but around 19h we had to leave in order to see Rammstein. Even though we only saw one hour instead of two we got into the mood of jazz and swing. There were times you just wanted to get up and start to dance along with the contagious music.
Rammstein Concert
We got to Pavilhão Atlântico around 19:30, met some friends on the way in and waited for the first band to come on stage and play. Combichrist opened with their electro-industrial sound. The place was sold out, so as the night went on the air was getting thinner. Combichrist are a Norwegian band that was formed in 2003. The band was well received by the portuguese audience, some were singing the songs, as for me I was only moving to it since I only knew one song. "What the Fuck is Wrong With You People" was the best song of their set. I am going to try and find out their setlist but so far I haven't been able to do it so.
9:10pm
Rammstein are waited with much entusiasm, the lights are out and the music beteween concerts is turn off. Whistles and screams are loud and clear to prove we want the concert to start. Their openning couldn't be better, in my opinion is somehow genius. They enter the stage with axes and blowtorches, and even though I've heard that that act might be seen as a metaphor with the fall of the Berlin Wall I don't see it as one. They start the nigh of with "Rammlied", a song from the new album "Liebe Ist Für Alle Da". Through the entire set there was fire, flamming dolls, a giant dick and fireworks. The concert was great as far as visual effects.
This was the first Rammstein concert I've been so I can't make a comparison to the last time they were here. The first big hit came with the song "Feuer Frei!", the crowd was chanting the song even though the language was foreigner, there were several mosh pits and people surfcrowding. Songs like "Link234", "Benzin", "Du Hast", "Pussy", "Ich Will", "Haifisch", "Seemann" and "Sonne" were some of the highlights of the concert, with "Du Hast" bringing lots of fire, "Pussy" having a giant dick coming on the audience, etc..
On the first encore the keyboard player did what I call surfcrowding with quality, with the help of a boat he surfcrowded the audience in "Seemann". There were two encores in which the best part of the concert happened, at least for me. On the last encore with "Sonne", I had chills all over my body, it was the most intense part of a night that ended at an Irish Pub after the concert.
